jug of paintbrushes
i don’t think its forward of me to say i’ve had a good life
i am glad i can still contain and provide
a dry echo of my past
its that crack you see
if i held milk now it would leak
so embarrassing
so now i hold paintbrushes
reminds me of the hands that painted me
they didn’t hang about
there were so many of us then
with softer colours than many of the youngsters wear now
yellow and blue flowers
green leaves
and those few strokes of maroon
perfectly decreasing in size
all that is needed to say petal
and pick up the line round my rim
and the other down the centre of my handle
we didn’t have airs and graces mind
we knew our place
we may not have come out for the posh dinners
along with all those fragile glasses
but we were a team
there for the family every day
plates bowls jugs
quietly doing what we were made for
and lifting people’s spirits
the ones who noticed us
who saved the last of us
i know there are a few others
on a shelf or in a cupboard
in distant houses
along with the memories
treasure hunt
a group of walkers stretches out
along the summer river bank
with their black bags and metal pickers
on the paths and river beaches
among foxgloves, elderflowers, wild roses
many others reach from kayaks
through overhanging trees
nettles, brambles and balsam
their finds will mount up at the meeting place
plastic wrappers, tyres, bottles and cans
traffic cones, computer consoles
one bent plastic window frame
the river is low today
with the next high water more
will come and more will come
in the sky above a lack of swallows
each year fewer come and fewer come
threshold
in the space in between
at the moment of neitherness
lies wisdom
as you move across the threshold
you have neither fully left here
nor fully arrived there
neither snowflake nor river
neither solid nor liquid
neither visible nor invisible
neither ceasing nor becoming
neither better nor worse
neither either nor both
open all your senses
open all the senses you dont know you have
in this non place
before going back into time
there is magic
possibility
potential
nothing is fixed
where the dancer’s hand changes direction
after the music and before the silence
the transition is all
